Q1. What is
the continuing education requirement for Registered
professional members?
30 CEU’s over a two (2) year period for
Registered professional members. A maximum of
15 Category II CEUs will be accepted toward the
30 CEU requirement.
Professional members who became Registered in
2004 will be required to document 30 CEU’s
to qualify for renewal of their registration in
2006. Those members interested in pursuing Registration
with the NANP are required to provide proof that
they are currently practicing or working in the
nutrition industry.
Q2. What is the continuing
education requirement for professional members?
10 CEU’s over a one (1) year period for
Professional members. A maximum of 5 Category
II CEUs will be accepted toward the 10 CEU requirement.
Q3. Can CEU’s
be rolled over from one cycle to another?
No
Q4. What opportunities
for continuing education does NANP provide?
NANP is continually working to expand its continuing
education offerings to members. Currently, NANP
recognizes two (2) categories of continuing education
credit. Category I includes the
following:
- Programs/seminars given by other organizations
and approved by NANP
- CEU approved articles, videos, books, short
courses and seminars offered by the NANP. Many
of which will be made available for purchase
via the NANP website.
- CEUs earned by submitting articles or short
courses that you have written (for a professional
audience) for use as CEU material for other
NANP members. Please see “CE Submission
Guidelines” below.
Category II includes continuing
education programs given by other organizations,
who have NOT applied to the NANP for CEU approval.
Q5. How can I earn Category
I CEUs through NANP approved courses or materials?
NANP has on its website a listing of
approved courses, books and videos that have been
pre-approved for continuing education credits.
Each listing will show an abstract of the course,
number of CEU’s available, and cost. In
general, unless the course is being sold by an
outside third party, the cost to members is $20
per CEU. This is a very economical way to fulfill
on your CEU requirement.
Upon completion of the course, book or video,
members will have to complete a short quiz regarding
the materials studied. This quiz MUST be submitted
to NANP in order to receive CEU’s for completion.
You may order continuing education materials
direct from the NANP website, by calling 800-342-8037,
or emailing info@nanp.org your order and payment
information. You may also order via US Mail by
sending a check along with your specified order
to: NANP, P.O. Box 1172 Danville, CA 94526.
Upon receipt of order and payment, we will email
or mail you the course and the quiz necessary
to complete the course.
You must return your completed quiz to NANP,
either by fax, email or US Mail, to receive your
CEUs.
The following are guidelines for each form of
course:
NANP Courses
These are courses that have been submitted by
professionals or by Registered NANP members. They
will vary in length and will be on a variety of
topics related to holistic nutrition. Courses
ranging in length from 5000-7500 words will earn
members 1 CEU and will cost $20. Courses ranging
in length from 7500-10,000 words will earn members
2 CEU’s and will cost $40.
For members wishing to submit courses for approval,
see “CE Submission Guidelines”.
Books
The Continuing Education Committee will periodically
review outside published books for inclusion as
CEU credit. We will only review books that are
specific to health and nutrition, are not “quick-fix”
claims and that are well-researched and contain
current information and philosophies.
Books under 200 pages will be worth 1 CEU and
will cost $20 plus the cost of the book. Books
over 200 pages will earn members 2 CEU’s
and will cost $40 plus the cost of the book.
NANP will not supply the books, but will let
members know how to order them online or the bookstores
at which they are available. We will provide you
with a test to take upon completion of the book
and this test MUST be returned to NANP in order
to receive CEU credit.
Videos
We have several video courses that have been submitted
for CEU’s by outside providers. NANP will
provide a brief abstract of content on our website
and the number of CEU’s offered upon completion
of the course (this will vary depending on the
course length and content). Members will be responsible
for contacting the listed party and purchasing
the video course directly from the responsible
provider. Again, cost will vary depending on length
and content of course. Members will be sent a
test that they must do upon completion of the
course and which MUST be returned to NANP to receive
CEU credit.
Q6. How do you determine
how many CEUs an article, seminar or course is
worth?
One (1) CEU will be issued per contact
hour for those courses/seminars that are submitted
and have passed the criteria for CEU submission.
Q7. How can I earn Category
II CEUs or continuing education credit for events
NANP has not approved?
NANP recognizes that there are many quality continuing
education programs available to nutrition professionals
and we encourage all providers to apply to the
NANP for CEU approval of their programs. We also
recognize that members may attend seminars that
NANP does not yet know about and/or through groups
that may not have applied to NANP for CEU credits
(Category II CEUs).
Guidelines for obtaining Category II CEUs include:
- A maximum of half of your total CEU requirement
may be met through Category II CEUs.
- 75% of the seminar must deal directly with
nutrition. For example, a seminar on herbology
would not be accepted unless it had a direct
and comprehensive nutritional component. For
seminars that cover a several day period, partial
CEU’s may be accepted if only a portion
of the total seminar is directly addressing
nutrition.
- The event must be approved for continuing
education credit by other associated groups
- A $20 review fee will be charged for each
Category II CEU program. Please include payment
information along with the required information
as noted above. Should an event not be approved
by the Continuing Education Committee, the $20
fee will be refunded.
- Proof of CEUs is required at the time of membership
and/or registration renewal. Please submit the
following information:
- Certificate of completion for the continuing
education event
- Name of sponsoring organization
- Date, time and location of event
- Cost of event
- Educational objectives of event
- Speaker name and short bio
- Schedule breakout
- How to register
- Whether the event qualifies for continuing
education credit
In most cases, a copy of the brochure for the
event will provide the majority of this information.
Q8. How do I submit
an article for continuing education approval?
All submissions must follow the required
formatting and contain the essential elements
as outlined below to qualify for CEU consideration.
Submissions may be made via email and attached
as a MicroSoft Word or Adobe Acrobat Reader file.
NANP Continuing Education (CE) Submission Guidelines
NANP invites members to submit articles and short
courses they have written that are appropriate
for the continuing educating of nutrition professionals.
Articles submitted and approved will be made available
for purchase by members (via download from the
NANP website) for continuing education credit.
Members who submit articles approved for use as
continuing education will earn three (3) CEUs
for their work.
Upon submitting an article, NANP will notify
you to confirm receipt of your work and again
when a determination of approval has been made.
New CEU articles will be posted every three (3)
months.
One 5000-7500 word article would be worth one
(1) continuing education unit (CEU) and 7500-10,000
would be worth two (2) CEUs. Video presentations
or powerpoint slide shows with detailed written
text support may also be submitted for CEU consideration.
