A Note From Our Executive Director Nicole Hodson:

Will this be the “Summer of You?”

I’m a caregiver. I mean that in a general sense. By nature, I’m a nurturer. I get great satisfaction out of doing for and caring for others. I think that’s one of the reasons I was drawn to holistic nutrition as a career. Maybe the same is true for you?

If so, then I have one question for you… how do you ensure that you’re also taking care of you? We, caregivers, tend to put others’ needs before our own, so I won’t be surprised if you’re less inclined to focus on yourself. In fact, most of us in this industry don’t!

That’s why we invited Terri Tate as our opening keynote speaker for this year’s conference in Portland. Terri reminded us of the importance of not only self-care but self-love. If you were in the room when she told her story then you were probably as inspired as me.

Terri really got me thinking that it’s time I incorporate some self-care into each day. So, I did something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. I reached out to one of my NANP pals and asked for help.

Yep! I’m a nutrition consultant, but I find it almost impossible to put a plan together for myself. I’ve also gotten lost in the myriad of exercise options out there; unable to solidly commit to a regimen.

My goals are simple, really. But the BIGGY is about prevention. You see both of my folks passed away in the last 3 years, and both had Alzheimer’s and dementia. I want to prevent going down that road. I want to be as vibrant as possible as I age.

So, I finally took the plunge and hired Christine Wokowsky to help me achieve my goals. Christine suggested a ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting, and helped me formulate a workout plan that includes weight lifting, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and my favorite… yoga.

I knew Christine would motivate me, and finally get me moving more regularly. She put it to me in one word. My workouts are, “non-negotiable.” That says it all. NON-NEGOTIABLE! Anytime I try to turn my attention to other things, I think, “non-negotiable!”
